Whispering Dreams II

MY STATEMENT

My watercolors piece together shards of information that create relationships between past/present, the realms of spirit and earth, abstract/ representational, and inner and outer realities. I attempt to create visual journeys that resonate with life-affirming memories and themes offering solace, refuge, and meditative spaces. Because of the associations created by the various juxtapositions, I often feel that the images talk to me as much as I control them. My hope is that these images will be a bridge to the inexplicable world of faith, instinct, emotion, intuition, dreams, poetry and the mysterious. I see my work as a kind of visual yoga which by keeping the eye active the mind is given a rest for that period of looking.

I have chosen to work with watercolors because of the translucent qualities of the medium and a lightness of the paint that allows the white of the paper to illuminate the work. Also, painting with watercolors insures that a spontaneous and direct feeling will be present even if the work is quite planned as mine often are.

I draw inspiration from numerous and widely varying sources:
- the distant past as well as the present moment
- the natural world
- travels
- my collection of vessels
- different cultures - American Indian, Chinese, Celtic
- memories and meditations
